Toma Belev has many years of experience in the management and development of protected areas and NATURA 2000 sites in Bulgaria. He has been involved in the planning and preparation of strategic documents, development, and discussion of many management plans for protected areas, preparation of manuals, National Strategies, and Standards. His expertise is sought after in various working groups, commissions, supervisory boards, negotiation with government institutions, international governmental and non-governmental organizations. Toma works actively for the improvement of environmental legislation, such as the Law of the forests, Protected Areas Act, Biodiversity Act, Law of the waters, environmental protection, and regulations. In the period 1999 – 2012, he was the director of Vitosha Nature Park. Since 2001, Toma has been a member of the Green Balkans Management Board. In the period from 2012 to 2014, he was elected to be its Chairman. Since 2003, he has been Chairman of the Board of the Association of Parks in Bulgaria. As an initiator and Chairman of APB, he works to build capacity and expertise in the institutions responsible for protected areas in Bulgaria.
