Andrey Kovachev is a naturalist, field biologist – herpetologist, environmentalist. He is in a constant battle for nature protection in different roles – participant in expert commissions, scientist drafting statements, street protests organizer, campaigner, petitioner, and more. He has extensive professional experience in public activities and campaigns in the field of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), Appropriate Assessment (AA), Strategic Environmental Assessment (EIA), sustainable management of natural resources, biodiversity, forests, water, landscapes in mountainous areas. For 11 years he was a member of the High Expert Environmental Council (HEEC) of the Ministry of Environment and Waters (MoEW). As a representative of the Bulgarian environmental organizations in Brussels, he has gained experience in working with European institutions (European Commission, European Parliament, Council of Europe). In the period from 2008 to 2014, he was a co-chairman of the Greens Political Party. Member of the BALKANI Wildlife Society since 1991, founder and initiator of the Coalition “For the Nature”, and among the initiators of many other nature conservation campaigns – Save Kresna Gorge (1997), Save Pirin (2000), Save Irakli (2006), and many others.
